Roofing and wall panels on the same project
The school has several connected low-slope roof areas, with equipment and penetrations across the building. On a campus roof, the field membrane is only part of the work. Roof edges, curbs and transitions to the walls need the same attention as the open roof areas.
Our scope also included ACM, or aluminum composite material, panels and MBCI wall panels. For a school facilities team reviewing a similar project, it helps to consider roofing and wall work together. The details where those systems meet need to be coordinated, and the finished roof still needs clear access for equipment service and routine inspections.
What to know about Sikaplan PVC
Sikaplan is a reinforced PVC single-ply membrane from Sika. A 60-mil sheet is 0.060 inches thick. Polyester reinforcement helps control stretching and provides tear resistance; hot-air welding joins the overlapping sheets at the seams.
That welded seam is an important part of a PVC roof. For the person maintaining the building, seams and flashings are useful inspection points, along with drains and areas exposed to service traffic. The white membrane also has a reflective surface. Its effect on a building’s cooling load depends on the complete roof assembly and operating conditions.
