Butcher Boys Restaurant – Nacogdoches, Texas

At Butcher Boys Restaurant in Nacogdoches, Texas, M&M Roofing installed a 60-mil Sikaplan PVC retrofit roof using RhinoBond attachment. The job included night work, with crews working on the roof under portable lighting.

This was an existing restaurant roof, rather than new construction. For a restaurant owner or facilities manager, a retrofit needs a plan for the existing roof assembly as well as the new membrane. Work hours, rooftop equipment and access to the building all need to be considered when setting the scope.

Project details

  • Facility: Butcher Boys Restaurant, Nacogdoches, Texas
  • Scope: Roof retrofit with night work
  • Membrane: Sikaplan PVC, 60 mil
  • Attachment: RhinoBond induction welding

How RhinoBond holds the membrane in place

RhinoBond is the attachment system beneath the membrane. Specially coated plates are mechanically fastened through approved insulation or roof board into the deck or structural purlins. The PVC sheet is laid over those plates. An induction-welding tool heats each plate through the membrane, bonding its coating to the underside of the sheet. A weighted cooling magnet holds the bond while it cools.

The attachment fastener stays below the roof membrane. It does not pass through the sheet at that fastening point. The membrane seams are a separate operation: overlapping PVC sheets are joined with hot-air welding. RhinoBond secures the sheet to the roof assembly; the seam weld joins one sheet to the next.

Sika describes RhinoBond as suitable for retrofit work, including metal roofs. Its attachment points can distribute uplift loads across the roof rather than concentrating attachment only along sheet seams. The required plate layout and fastening depend on the deck, roof zones and specified wind-uplift requirements. See Sika’s RhinoBond system overview and RhinoBond plate details.

What matters on a restaurant retrofit

Before choosing a recover or retrofit assembly, the existing roof needs to be assessed for moisture, substrate condition and attachment capacity. Wet material and weak fastening substrates need to be addressed in the scope. RhinoBond does not remove that need.

Night work was part of the Butcher Boys project. On a restaurant job, agreeing on the work window is as important as selecting the membrane. The plan needs to account for lighting, crew access and the equipment serving the kitchen. During installation, induction-weld calibration and bond checks matter alongside seam checks; Sika’s applicator handbook sets out those requirements.
